This assumes:
6–12 rearing tanks
Standard Chinook growth cycles
Adequate water circulation and oxygenation
Tribal and state coordination for release timing
That’s a serious number of fish — especially when targeted directly into Southern Resident foraging zones.
What does this mean?
Southern Residents need roughly:
300–400 Chinook per whale per day during peak feeding
Population: 74 whales
Total daily need: ~25,000–30,000 Chinook
A hatchery producing 500,000 juveniles isn’t feeding the whales directly — but it boosts survival rates and buffers low-return years.
Even if only 1–3% survive to adulthood, that’s:
5,000–15,000 adult Chinook returning to the Salish Sea
Enough to stabilize feeding during critical shortages
Enough to prevent starvation events for pregnant or nursing females
The big Picture
Wild juvenile Chinook have a survival rate of 0.5–1%.
Hatchery-raised juveniles often reach 2–4% survival because they:
Grow larger before release
Avoid early predation
Enter the ocean stronger
Are released during optimal tides and temperatures
This means the hatchery doesn’t just produce fish — it produces more fish that actually survive.
Because Orca Embassy SALISH plans to involve:
Ferndale schools
Lummi Nation students
Western Washington University
Local volunteers
They can operate more tanks and expand production over time.
This is how the hatchery could reach the upper end of the 1‑million‑fish range.
In extreme cases — like when J‑pod is clearly starving — the hatchery could:
Release salmon directly into their foraging path
Time releases to coincide with whale presence
Provide controlled supplemental feeding
This is controversial, but NOAA has already acknowledged that emergency feeding may become necessary if Chinook runs continue to decline.
A ferry‑based hatchery is not symbolic — it’s practical, scalable, and life-saving.
It can produce enough Chinook to:
Stabilize Southern Resident feeding
Prevent starvation events
Support pregnant females
Strengthen wild runs
Give the Salish Sea breathing room while habitat restoration catches up
